Bob Hope entertained American GI’s starting in May of
1941, when the country was at peace. When World War II
broke, he – with a band of “Hollywood gypsies,”
took off for Europe, North Africa and the South Pacific.
Throughout the war, all of Bob’s weekly radio shows were
performed before GI audiences. The tradition of spending
Christmas with the troops began in 1948 when Bob, with his wife
Dolores, flew to Europe to entertain Americans involved with the
Berlin airlift. Among Bob’s most cherished memories were
those holidays he shared with our troops in
Vietnam.
